Why shop at a Farmers Market?
Fruits and vegetables are widely available in farmers’ markets during the peak of the growing season. This shows that the produce is at its freshest and most delicious. Food is usually grown near home, rather than thousands of miles away or in another country. Shopping at farmers’ markets supports local farmers while also making a profit you spend on food closer to your neighborhood.
A registered dietitian talks with farmers and customers at a farmers’ market in a video created by Nutrition.gov to highlight the benefits of buying at farmers’ markets.
Here’s a sneak peek at our Top Reasons to shop at Farmers Markets to help you identify local markets and maximize your market experience:
Many farmer’s markets do paper and plastic.
Many farmers’ markets now take credit cards, SNAP benefits, and other nutrition benefits in addition to cash. Just remember to bring your jute or reusable shopping bag!
Something new
Farmers’ markets show what’s in season in your region, so you’ll often discover old favorites as well as new foods that will stretch your culinary imagination. Have you ever tried gooseberries or rhubarb or seen a stalk of Brussels sprouts? Have you ever slurped a donut peach? These are some of the items you might find at a farmers’ market near you. Perhaps you’ll find some new favorites!
Learn a farmer’s secret
Farmers enjoy sharing their secrets on market day. The first is tips on preparing fresh ingredients, so if you’re not sure what to do with kohlrabi or want to make your tomato salsa spicy, simply ask the farmer.
